More and more people on Long Island are becoming aware of indoor air pollution.  It is definitely an area of growing concern and is something that can easily be prevented with air duct and HVAC cleaning. In fact, you’ve probably seen some companies promote this service which will improve your indoor air quality on T.V. or received advertising to this effect in the mail.

How does cleaning the air ducts and HVAC system help to improve indoor air quality? When one of our qualified technicians cleans your air ducts and HVAC system, they typically check and clean various cooling and heating system components.  These can include but is not limited to grilles and diffusers, supply and return ducts, cooling coils, heat exchangers, fans, motors, and condensate drip pans.

When one or more of these components is not properly maintained, the parts can become contaminated by pollen, other debris, and dust.  If there is moisture present, it can increase the chances for mold growth and spores to be released into the indoor air.  These contaminants can cause a reaction or symptom in the people who are exposed to them.

If you decide that you are going to have your air ducts and HVAC system cleaned, be sure that the vendor is going to be cleaning all the components of your system.  If one or more elements aren't cleaned correctly, it can result in a re-contamination of the entire system once it is energized.

While there are various methods that can be used to clean your air ducts, standards have been established by industry associations.  Typically, special tools will be used to remove any dirt and debris, and then a high-powered vacuum will be used to vacuum the dirt and debris out.

Once the air ducts have been thoroughly cleaned, our service technician may want to apply chemical biocides, which will kill any microbiological contaminants.  This would be applied inside the ducts and to the other components of the system.  And in some instances where there are signs of mold growth, a chemical treatment may also be required to cover the surfaces of the air ducts.

So how do you know if you need your air ducts and HVAC system require cleaning?  What you can do is to do a visual inspection to see if there are any mold or dust deposits or if there is a musty odor, or if someone is suffering from allergies more than normal.  These are all signs that a professional air duct-cleaning specialist should come out and inspect your systems.

Air ducts and HVAC systems should be regularly cleaned to help keep dirt, dust, and mold from being spread throughout the building and degrade the indoor air quality. With proper maintenance performed by a qualified air ducts and HVAC cleaning professional, you will ensure that the indoor air quality stays as high as possible.
